Australian racing's newest jewel in the crown, The Championships in Sydney, now has world-class trophies to match with stunning creations by leading luxury jewellery house Cerrone.
The trophies, featuring an emerald horse with Argyle pink diamond eyes and black diamond mane and hooves were crafted for The Championships at Royal Randwick on April 12 and 19.
The use of emeralds was inspired by Sydney being known as 'The Emerald City'. In the classic book, and later movie The Wizard of Oz, The Emerald City is located in the center of the Land of Oz, at the end of the famous yellow brick road.
After researching trophies throughout the world the design chosen was "innovative, creative and different - to really show the world Australian talent", said Mr Nic Cerrone, adding the curves of the horse was fundamental to the design of the trophy. "Curves are a main element of Cerrone designs, they represent nature and in this case sculpt the magnificently stong and muscular detail of the racehorse".
Each major trophy was pave set with over 2,000 green emeralds weighing over 40ct and 140 black diamonds weighing 4.52ct with 2 natural Australian Argyle pink diamond for eyes.
The trophies were awarded to winning connections of the 10 Championships races on Day 1 and Day 2 of The Championships. They add further prestige to the event which already carries a stunning $18.2million in prizemoney. Winning trainers and jockeys also receive a miniture replica of the trophy.
